Teacher Mentors Abroad offers two types of volunteer opportunities:

  1. Teacher mentoring from Canada and in the field.
  2. Administrative and logistical support in Canada.

Teacher Mentors Abroad programming consists of field visits to our host communities and online dialogue and provision of training resources. We conduct a series of professional development training sessions for teachers based on a training of trainers (TOT) model. First we identify lead teachers in the community, followed by training sessions during future field visits. Finally, we equip the lead teachers to run professional development events for their colleagues.

Much preparation and planning goes into our field visits. Extensive debriefing and follow-up mentorship activities take place after each visit.

Anyone with an interest or passion for education can apply for a position on one of our teacher mentor teams
(
see Current Projects). While we are most interested in individuals with specific educational experience, other professional skills might be needed depending on the nature of the programming.

As a member of a mentor team you are working in another country and within another culture. This requires a certain level of cultural sensitivity. Living conditions in under-resourced countries can be challenging. The amenities we take for granted in Canada are not always available. However, if you are open-minded, flexible and have a desire to learn, the rewards of interacting with another culture far outweigh the challenges.

In Canada, volunteers contribute their time and skills to the many logistical and administrative tasks involved in supporting our teacher mentor teams and helping our organization run smoothly. Volunteers are welcomed in the following areas:

  • Mentors : experienced in Professional Learning Communities, Literacy, Math, Cooperative Learning, Special Education
  • Communications/writer and IT / website support
  • Sourcing of Spanish education resources
  • Photographer/videographer on team trips
  • Translations services (Spanish)
  • Research and program development
  • Hosting Information Sessions/Displays
  • Assisting at Special Events
