About Us
Vision
TMA shall foster professional learning partnerships consisting of a vibrant corps of Canadian educators coupled with identified teachers in project sites. Emerging from each partnership will be improved instructional practices as well as local leadership capable of sustaining a dynamic professional learning community dedicated to ongoing instructional improvement.
Mission
Grounded in the fundamental belief that quality education stems from effective instruction, TMA is devoted to the work of strengthening educators’ capacity in the Dominican Republic.
Our History
January 2005
Summer 2006
Today
A mission team from Leaskdale, Ontario hosted a youth leadership camp in Hainamosa, an under-resourced community outside Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Dominican teachers observed the team use co-operative learning strategies with students, and expressed interest in learning about this approach.
TMA was created in response to this. Canadian educators facilitated a workshop for 70 teachers in Hainamosa. It was so successful that both the Dominicans and Canadians realized there was a need for a bigger program. Future workshops on instructional strategies were planned based on the sustainable training of trainers model.
TMA now works with mentor teams in four locations (Santiago, Santo Domingo, Consuelo and La Vega), focusing on workshop development and facilitation skills. The Canadian team of mentors have then supported the Dominican educators as they led workshops for their colleagues. Dominican mentors are encouraged to continue sharing effective teaching strategies with colleagues throughout the year.
